Lucy Stoner has no idea who she is — or how she ended up fighting for her life in the Brazos River.
When cattleman Gavin Asheland pulls her from the raging water, he is not happy to find himself responsible for a mysterious woman who can’t remember her own name. He learned the hard way that trusting a woman can destroy everything a man holds dear.
With nowhere else to go, Lucy joins Ashe’s cattle drive to Kansas, hoping the journey will help her recover her lost memory. But as she becomes part of the camp, she finds herself falling hard for Ashe and his little girl. If she only knew whether she left a husband and kids behind her.
Ashe finds the tiny redheaded woman creeping under the walls he built around his heart. Then she calls him by another man’s name, and he promptly reconstructs those walls stronger than ever.
Lucy finds a stowaway running from a life of abuse and promises her Ashe will be glad to help her escape her abuser. Ashe has no intention of hauling a fallen woman across the prairie with his daughter in the same wagon. Lucy is shocked at his judgmental attitude and throws down the gauntlet.
Ashe yields and takes them all to Dodge, where he leaves Lucy to find her own way, even though it tears his heart to pieces, and returns home to breed horses in Bandera, Texas.
After Ashe leaves her behind, Lucy is injured and her memories return. She heads home to Sweetwater and buries that part of her life. Then she meets Jed Thompson and decides to give him a chance. When he asks her to marry him, she accepts. It’s not the life she dreamed about with Ashe, but Jed is a good man and easy to love, and he offers her a home and family.
If only he hadn’t ordered all those horses from that breeder in Bandera.
Can two wounded hearts struggling with the pain of lost love learn to trust again — and discover that God’s grace is waiting if they’ll only surrender their own judgment?
